Earlier this week, we posted a list of six actions to take in the wake of your California slip and fall accident. While completing those six steps will increase your chances of a better recovery and improve your possible premises liability case, there also are several actions you can take that could damage your recovery for both your health and possible financial compensation.
Here’s what you shouldn’t do after a slip and fall accident:
- Never apologize. While certainly you may regret that an accident occurred, and feel sorrow that it did occur, make an effort not to say you are sorry. Expressing sorrow by saying “I’m sorry” can be interpreted as an admission of fault. Sometimes it requires effort not to say “I’m sorry” even when it obviously isn’t your fault. The cause of a slip and fall accident doesn’t become clear until all of the evidence is gathered. Never assume it is your fault.
- Never leave the scene early. Because slip, trip, and fall accidents often are embarrassing, many injury victims respond by simply leaving the scene as quickly as possible. This is the wrong approach. Instead, stay for medical attention, to report the accident, and to collect any vital information.
- Never ignore pain or symptoms of injuries. It is imperative to have your injuries examined, diagnosed, and treated as soon as possible. Don’t try to sleep it off, give yourself medical care, or refuse treatment. See your doctor, knowing that you (and your body) won’t regret it.
- Never give in to inaction. Some people say they want to “put the accident behind them” even when someone else was obviously at fault for their injuries. Others simply don’t want to take the time to speak with an attorney. However, often the best way to put the accident behind you is to make sure the at-fault party takes responsibility for the accident, and for you to obtain the compensation you need to pay your medical bills.
