Around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 9, 2013, three Anaheim women were struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver. Carmen Mendoza, her daughter Sheyla Mendoza, and her niece Stephanie Henriquez reportedly were walking home after attending a baby shower when they were hit. The accident occurred in the 100 block of South Western Avenue in Anaheim. Sheyla Mendoza, 21 years old, is reported to have died at the scene of the accident. Fifty-six-year-old Carmen Mendoza and Henriquez, 21 years old, were transported to the hospital from the scene, but both women later died as a result of their injuries. On Sunday night, grieving family and friends created a memorial at the accident scene and came together to light candles, leave flowers, comfort each other, and share memories after such a shocking loss. The suspected drunk driver and a female passenger reportedly sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the accident and were transported to an area hospital for treatment. According to Anaheim police, forty-year-old Anthony Lewis Sanchez, of Buena Park, has been arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter in the case. The OC accident attorneys with Russell & Lazarus are deeply saddened by this tragic accident. We offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of these three women. Once again, we urge all Orange County drivers to take caution when pedestrians are present, and never get behind the wheel when intoxicated.
