Fatal Mission Viejo Car Accident Stops Train Service

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, a 52-year-old Mission Viejo man was killed in a car accident on Saturday evening. The man, identified as Craig Engstrom, was driving a Lexus east on Alicia Parkway when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the center median. His car then drove off of the overpass and landed upside down on the train tracks below.

The man died of the injuries he sustained in the Mission Viejo car accident. A number of trains, including Metrolink, Amtrak, and BNSF Railway trains, were delayed for approximately four hours as car accident investigators and clean-up crews surveyed the accident. An estimated 300 passengers on these trains were transported to their destinations by bus.

The California car accident is still under investigation.

Also in Mission Viejo this week, a family of five was involved in a four-vehicle accident at the intersection of Oso and Marguerite. The Orange County Sheriff’s Department believes the crash occurred after one of the four vehicles ran a red light.

The family, which consisted of a mother and her two sets of twins, ages 10 and 13, was in a minivan which was struck on the side. Four out of the five family members suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including facial lacerations, concussions, broken bones, and injured ribs. The driver of one of the other vehicles involved in the accident was taken to a local hospital for treatment, also.

The family credited both side airbags and seatbelts for saving the children from more serious car accident injuries.
