April Again Brings Effort to Reduce CA Distracted Driving Accidents

Last year, police in California issued nearly 61,000 distracted driving tickets in an April crackdown on cell phone use behind the wheel. This year, they hope to do it again. Police across California are stepping up their efforts to enforce the state’s cell phone ban during the month of April, and drivers who are caught breaking the law can expect to see tickets that cost them $159 or more.

Just last month, a national study of US drivers found that 69% of drivers report talking on the phone behind the wheel, and 33% reported checking texts or sending text messages. Since the first year of the cell phone ban, California has seen a 41% increase in tickets for talking while driving and a 640% increase in tickets for texting while driving. During the April crackdown last year, police in California wrote over twice as many tickets for cell phone use as they do in an average month.
